Chris Mayne notched an important milestone when he kicked the first of his two goals against Brisbane on Saturday night.

It was his 200th career goal, and it was a long time coming.

Mayne entered the season on 198 majors, having kicked 196 during his Fremantle days and a further two last year.

But a series of behinds had held him back this year – a run of eight, in fact, that stood between his 199th and 200th goals.

“It’s been much spoken about amongst the boys, with a few laughs here and there,” Mayne smiled after Collingwood’s 31-point win over the Lions.

“Will Hoskin-Elliott and Jaidyn Stephenson have been riding me for about eight weeks to hurry up and get it done.

“Each of the past eight or so shots have come close, with a few posters here and there. They (Hoskin-Elliott and Stephenson) have been on the edge of their seats waiting to get across to me.”

Mayne has enjoyed a fine 2018 campaign, playing 15 matches in a row since breaking back into the side against Richmond in round six.

He is averaging 17.2 disposals and five marks per game, playing on the wing and helping move the ball between the arcs.

“To be a part of this team is amazing,” he told Collingwood Media.

“We are really building to something special. We’re being selfless and celebrating others’ success which all leads to team success, in the end.

“The guys are great, we’ve got such a strong bond at the moment and as it’s been said in the public, we’ve had injuries but it has been next bloke in. We’ve got a lot of trust in the people that are coming in. They are just going to play role and give great effort.

“No matter who is in and what is going on, we just work hard and get the job done and little things like that mean a lot more, especially when you get the win.”

Mayne, who featured in 11 finals for Fremantle, including an appearance in their 2013 decider, said he and his teammates firmly have their feet on the ground as they prepare for the final two home and away matches of the season.

“We’ve got two games to go now.

“Next week is Port and that’s what we’re going to focus on. Everyone is just going to get their bodies right, enjoy the week and get ready to bounce in against Port.”
