Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy has finished equal-fifth in the AFL Coaches' Association Champion Player of the Year award.

Grundy polled a perfect score of 10 votes in the Magpies' round 23 win over Essendon, but he still finished 25 votes behind the winner, Western Bulldogs midfielder Marcus Bontempelli.

Bontempelli tallied 107 votes for the season, with Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield second on 90, Fremantle's Nat Fyfe third on 88 and Geelong's Tim Kelly, who led for much of the season, fourth on 86.

Grundy, Carlton's Patrick Cripps and Brisbane Lions onballer Lachie Neale finished tied for fifth on 82 votes.
