Collingwood's VFLW team has added another win to its books after claiming a seven-point victory over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.
Magpies’ co-captain Ruby Schleicher was happy with her team’s efforts and admitted relief to secure a second win for the season.
“Obviously it’s good to get the four points on the road otherwise it would’ve been a long drive back to Melbourne without them,” Schleicher told collingwood.com.au.
All possible conditions made an appearance at the Cattery with sun, rain and wind clearly troubling both sides, creating for a very scrappy game of footy.
“We were expecting it to be a bit worse, so for it to sprinkle a bit in the first and second quarters allowed us to make sure we were a lot cleaner around the ball as the game went on,” Schleicher said.
Despite these challenges, the Magpies managed to immediately apply pressure around the ball from the first bounce and provided great force within the contest.
Their hard-working efforts saw the ball spend majority of its time at the Pies’ end, but unfortunately they struggled to make something of their opportunities.
Maddie Shevlin finally found a way to restore her team’s spirits, snapping a goal halfway through the first.
There was something about kicking towards the Players’ stand with the Cats keeping the majority of play within its forward 50 in the second term.
But they too struggled to convert onto the scoreboard.
As the rain eased off and sun returned for the second half, both teams came out more energised and eager.
The Pies had the perfect start to the third term with Jaimee Lambert snapping one long in the opening minutes.
But Jordan Ivey soon followed, booting the Cats’ first goal for the day.
Lambert was again dominant in the final quarter booting her second, securing the Pies 12 – point lead.
Schleicher also played a major role down back.
Her ability to read the play proved vital in her producing several crucial turnovers.
While a goal from Rebecca Webster in the remaining two minutes of the game wasn’t ideal, the Pies were able to walk away seven- point victors.
“There are a lot of learnings to take away from this game, particularly with us going in harder and being first to the ball,” Schleicher admitted.
“It was good to experience the rain today as I’m sure we’ll face lots more of those types of conditions coming into winter.”
The Pies will return to Victoria Park on Saturday, June 1 where they’ll face the Northern Territory Thunder at 2pm.
