Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse could see plenty of positives despite watching his inexperienced side slip to a 117-66 defeat against a Kangaroos team more advanced in their season preparations.Malthouse was pleased with his crop of young guns and singled out 19-year-old pair Scott Pendlebury and Dale Thomas for special praise."The players I thought did well today were the second-year players who haven't had great pre-season form and actually found a bit of form like Pendlebury and Thomas," he said."Other players that we played first-up, I thought they showed enough to suggest that we picked them for the right reasons.""You think that over a period of 12 months to two years they should be able to connect their passages of play together and make them much better players."Collingwood's intensity certainly lifted in second-half when they scored seven of their nine goals to bring to life a divided Gold Coast support in what is the first of four matches the Roos will play at Carrara Stadium this year. But the Pies were already 47 points adrift by half-time, leaving Malthouse lamenting a series of turnovers which, by his calculation, led to around nine Kangaroos scores."The first-half we were found out of position too many times, we allowed them to play on too many times, committed too many easy turnovers," he said."You can't give sides that sort of start and expect to look good on the scoreboard."Half-back Harry O'Brien was taken to hospital during the match with suspected broken ribs.
