A number of Collingwood players and coaches could take home some silverware when the AFL Awards take place tonight at Centrepiece in Melbourne.

Ahead of the joint awards ceremony, all your questions are answered.

What awards are being presented?

The joint awards ceremony will feature the announcement of the 2024 All-Australian team, the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) awards and AFL Coaches Association awards (AFLCA).

The AFLPA awards include:

  • AFL Players’ Most Valuable Player Award, proudly presented Snaffle
  • AFL Players’ Best First Year Player Award, proudly presented by Local Expert
  • AFL Players’ Best Captain Award, proudly presented by The Diamond Guys
  • AFL Players’ Most Courageous Player Award, proudly presented by Tackle Your Feelings

All AFLPA awards are voted by the AFL playing cohort.

The AFLCA awards include:

  • AFLCA Champion Player of the Year

The AFL Coaches Association’s AFL Champion Player Award is an award voted by the 18 coaching panels on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis after each home and away game, acknowledging outstanding effort by an individual player in a season.

  • AFL Coaches Association Best Young Player

Recognition of the player who, based on his performance in his first two seasons of AFL Football deserves to be acknowledged as the Best Young Player.

  • Monjon Allan Jeans Senior Coach of the Year

Recognition of the best performed Senior Coach throughout the home and away season, having regard for current season's performance, available resources, player talent and team management.

  • AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year

Awarded based on input from the Players and Coaches, on a 50-50 basis.

  • Development Coach of the Year

The Development Coach of the Year is awarded based on input from both players and coaches, on a 50-50 basis. Coaches are asked to rate development coaches at their club, based on their overall performance this year, allocating each a score out of 10 (10 being the highest) and then obtaining an average. This is matched by an average score out of 10 from their playing group to determine an overall score.

Which Collingwood players are nominated?

All-Australian team

Collingwood pair Darcy Cameron and Nick Daicos have been named in the All-Australian Squad for 2024.

The final side will be announced at Thursday night’s AFL Awards.

It’s the second year in a row that Daicos has been named in the squad, following his selection in the midfield of the 2023 side. Cameron has been selected in the squad for the first time after a breakout season in the ruck.

Cameron has averaged 29.8 hit outs, a career best return in his sixth season at AFL level and fifth in black and white. He has recorded 673 total hit outs, placing him ninth in the AFL in 2024. The 204cm ruck has also been vital around the ground, averaging 4.6 marks a game and booting nine majors.

The following Magpies are nominees in AFLPA Awards, to be announced at Thursday night’s Awards ceremony.

Which Collingwood players have previously won the awards?

All-Australian team

Since the inception of the modern All-Australian team in 1991, Collingwood has had players selected on 49 occasions.

Nathan Buckley has been selected seven times, which is the equal second most of all-time alongside Craig Bradley (Carlton), Wayne Carey (North Melbourne and Adelaide) and Paul Roos (Fitzroy and Sydney). Five players have been selected eight times – Gary Ablett Jnr. (Geelong and Gold Coast), Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide and Geelong), Lance Franklin (Hawthorn and Sydney), Robert Harvey (St Kilda) and Mark Ricciuto (Adelaide).

Seven current day Collingwood players have been selected in All Australian sides. Scott Pendlebury (6 - 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019), Tom Mitchell (2 at Hawthorn – 2017, 2018), Darcy Moore (2- 2020, 2023), Josh Daicos (2023), Nick Daicos (2023), Brayden Maynard (2022), Steele Sidebottom (2018).
