Collingwood have won their fourth VFL game of 2024 after an arm wrestle victory over Brisbane at the AIA Vitality Centre.

The Magpies took a seven-point lead into the main break after an arm wrestle of a first half.

Co-Captain Sam Glover booted two first half goals, while AFL-listed youngsters Charlie Dean, Finlay Macrae and Charlie Dean were busy across the ground.

VFL debutant Isiah Markovsky kicked a major either side of the break, Joe Richards booted two in the second half, while veteran Ben Crocker kicked one to give the Magpies an eight-point victory to round out a challenging 2024 season.

Dean stands tall down back

After missing all but one with game in 2023 through a foot injury, Charlie Dean continued his strong 2024 at VFL level with 17 marks and 27 disposals in the Magpies win.

The 2021 Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medallist, for best player aged under 23 in the VFL, has been a consistent performer in a tough year for the Pies averaging 7.5 marks a game.

In this afternoon’s clash Dean was a key cog down back with 11 intercept possessions, the equal most on the ground.

Electric Richards spurs on Pies

AFL listed small forward Joe Richard returned to VFL level in style, booting two crucial second half goals alongside his 23 disposals and six marks.

The 2022 draftee picked up where he left off against the VFL Lions after booting a career high six goals in Round Two.

Young Pies stand up

AFL listed Magpies in Finlay Macrae, Charlie Dean, Edward Allan and Joe Richards all stood tall when their side needed most in Saturday’s victory. Contributing 110 disposals between them and taking the top four spots in the Magpies’ ball winners list.

Their shared experience at AFL level in 2024 due to an injury affected season for Collingwood can only be seen as a positive and it was on full display against an experienced Lions side.

Ed Allan and Joe Richards combined in style for a sensational team goal late in the third term, with Allan winning a scrappy centre clearance to deliver the ball to Richards who was on the edge of the centre square. The zippy full-forward in Richards took a bounce and launched the Sherrin from beyond 50, booting an important goal and providing the large Magpie Army contingent at the AIA Vitality Centre with a special highlight.
