Ladder-leading Sydney has stormed home with the last five goals of the game to edge Collingwood by three points in a thriller at the SCG on Friday night.

The Magpies looked to have the game all but sewn up after leading by 27 points midway through the final quarter, but with top spot on the line, the Swans responded to storm home for the unlikeliest of victories, 13.11 (89) to 12.14 (86).

While the win gives the Swans a buffer at the top of the table, the loss means the Magpies' faint hope of featuring in September is all but over.

It marked the Swans' first win since Round 18.
