In the beginning...
Find out how Collingwood has fared in its first meetings against the league's expansion clubs.
Round 18 2011
Gold Coast 11.9 (75) def. by Collingwood 19.15 (129) at Metricon Stadium
Brownlow Medal: 3. S.Pendlebury (Coll), 2. L.Ball (Coll), 1. B.Johnson (Coll)
The Magpies boarded the flight to Carrara for the first time since 1992 and kept their clean record at the venue in tact with a 54-point win over the Suns. Gold Coast threatened to cause an upset when it kicked the first two goals of the game, but the likes of Scott Pendlebury, Ben Johnson, Leon Davis and Luke Ball had other ideas. Queensland native Lachlan Keeffe led the goal kicking for Collingwood, kicking three goals in only his third game. The Collingwood players came up against former teammates Josh Fraser, Sam Iles and Danny Stanley who have since joined the Suns.
Round 1 1997
Collingwood 26.10 (166) def. Port Adelaide 13.9 (87) at the MCG?
Brownlow: 3. S.Russell (Coll), 2. G.Brown (Coll), 1. P.Williams (Coll)
Collingwood hosted Port Adelaide in the Power’s first season as an AFL side at the MCG on Saturday afternoon. In front of 51,883, the Magpies registered a 79-point victory to take last year’s 11th-placed side to second on the ladder after the opening round. Paul Williams was sublime with 30 disposals and four goals while Saverio Rocca booted six majors against former Collingwood coach John Cahill. Crumbing forward Stephen Patterson etched his name into the record books when he kicked the first three goals of the game and subsequently the first three ever kicked against the Power.
Round 13 1997
Brisbane Lions 11.22 (88) def. Collingwood 11.7 (73) at the Gabba?
Brownlow: 3. J.Molloy (BL), 2. M.Clarke (BL), 1. N.Buckley (Coll)??
Collingwood precariously held on to eighth spot as it headed north to take on the recently-merged Brisbane Lions. Things didn’t start well for Tony Shaw’s men as they were unable to produce a score in the opening term. Captain Nathan Buckley (28 disposals and two goals) thrived at his former home ground and almost got his team over the line in front of 19,560. The 15-point result proved critical for both sides at the end of the home-and-away season with Brisbane clinching a finals berth and Collingwood missing out by two points.??
Round 8 1995
Collingwood 20.11 (131) def. Fremantle 14.9 (93) at Victoria Park
Brownlow: 3. P.Williams (Coll), 2. N.Buckley (Coll), 1. A.James (Coll)??
Fremantle had the pleasure of taking on Collingwood at its home ground in front of 22,466 members of the Army. The Magpies were in cruise control for the first half pilling on 14 goals to three until the visitors chipped away in garbage time to finally lose by 38 points. Saverio Rocca had a field day with six goals while Nathan Buckley and Paul Williams added three each.
Round 15 1991
Collingwood 23.22 (160) def. Adelaide 5.7 (37) at Victoria Park
Brownlow: 3. T.Lehmann (Coll), 2. T.Francis (Coll), 1. S.Russell (Coll)?
South Australian crowds are known for their parochialism, but nothing could have prepared them for a mid-season trip to the Victoria Park furnace to take on the reigning premiers. The match was an annihilation as the Magpies careered to a 123-point victory in front of 25,164 diehards. Sixth-gamer Mark Richardson had the crowd buzzing with six goals while favourite son James Manson bagged five to go with his 20 disposals and 16 hitouts. Rover Tony Francis also enjoyed his afternoon as he helped himself to 40 possessions and three goals. Former Pie Grantley Fielke was the only Crow with ties to the black and white.
Round 10 1987
West Coast 19.23 (137) def. Collingwood 11.14 (80) at Subiaco Oval
Brownlow: 3. J.Annear (WCE), 2. D.Turner (WCE), 1. D.Holmes (WCE)
Collingwood’s first excursion to the land of the Sandgropers wasn’t an enjoyable one. The Pies arrived back home with a 57-point loss to their name and with plenty of thinking to do as they sat third last on the AFL ladder. Their opponents led all afternoon (the match was played on a Monday) with ex-Magpie John Annear running riot with three goals and 26 disposals. Future Pie Murray Wrensted was another strong performer for West Coast, winning 27 possessions in the midfield. Fittingly, Collingwood’s best player in its first league match at Subiaco Oval was native West Australian Michael Christian who kicked three goals and had 20 possessions in his tenth senior outing.
Round 6 1987
Collingwood 16.9 (105) def. Brisbane Bears 8.10 (58) at Victoria Park
Brownlow: 3. D.Cloke (Coll), 2. J.Turner (Coll), 1. P.Morwood (Coll)
The Brisbane Bears had to part with the Queensland sun in exchange for a run on the boggy surface of Victoria Park in its sixth game since its formation. Collingwood couldn’t be denied another win on its home soil and were rarely troubled thanks largely to key forwards James Manson and Brian Taylor who each kicked four. Club legends Gavin Brown and Darren Millane chipped in for two apiece while the little known quartet comprising Graeme Atkins, Terry Keays, Matthew Ryan and Paul Rizonico each snagged one. Skipper Tony Shaw gathered 33 possessions but the umpires still couldn’t find room for him among the Brownlow votes as David Cloke swept the pool courtesy of his 21 touches and 17 hitouts.
Round 8 1982
Sydney 15.25 (115) def. Collingwood 13.19 (97) at the SCG
Disposals: T.Shaw 35, M.Taylor 24, J.Annear 23, R.Barham 22, G.Allan 20
South Melbourne relocated to the harbour city for the 1982 season and hosted its first match at the ground against the previous year’s beaten Grand Finalists in round eight. The Swans held sway for the first three quarters in front of 20,905 but were given a little bit to think about by a fast-finishing Collingwood that outscored them in the final quarter with eight goals to one. Former Swan Graham Teasdale played his first match against his former side and kicked two for the Magpies as did Craig Stewart. John Annear, who would later feature for the Eagles in their first game against Collingwood, kicked three. Future premiership captain Tony Shaw collected 35 disposals and kicked the 50th goal of his career, all at the tender age of 21.
For the record?
Collingwood has won 15 and lost four matches playing against a side for the first time (including University).
