Toovey out for season
Alan Toovey will miss the remainder of the season with a broken foot.
Alan Toovey played in last Saturday night’s 45-point victory over Sydney with a level of courage that typifies what wearing the black and white guernsey represents.
Early in the first quarter Toovey limped off with soreness in his foot which was later scanned and found to be broken. He came on minutes later and played the game out.
Coach Michael Malthouse addressed Toovey’s courage in “Mick’s Message” which is sent out weekly to every Collingwood member.
“They boys had to keep the pressure on Sydney all night. I think this pressure and courage was typified by Alan Toovey who has set a new standard for playing for the team,” Malthouse said.
“He felt something go in his foot in the first quarter and had some treatment so he could get back on the ground.
“He played the entire game with a broken bone in his foot. Towards the end of the game he hurt his shoulder as well and he got up and continued to play his role which gave us the opportunity when we lost Scott Burns to be able to rotate a few players.”
The 21-year old has played seven games for the club this year and was on the verge of making his first finals appearance.
“He (Toovey) has set such a high and wonderful standard. He will go in tomorrow to have a pin placed in his foot, so he won’t play for the rest of the year. He has now set such a standard that our player group now can’t let him down."
