Darren Jolly has published his thoughts on the Ben Cousins documentary screened on Channel Seven on Wednesday and Thursday night this week.
I found myself enthralled watching the Ben Cousins documentary over the last two nights. While it made for entertaining television, I was left with two questions.
Why did he abuse his body to the extent that he did?
And more importantly, how did he get away with it?
Yes, the drug testing of players has increased significantly since 2008, but nevertheless we were still tested.
How didn’t they pick up on it even after the shaved head saga? Extraordinary.
To watch the levels of despair he experienced and to see where he is now was amazing. To see how he could justify using drugs because he trained hard and left nothing on the ground was insightful.
I heard rumors, like everyone, about the 2006 West Coast side and what they were up to and last night confirmed those thoughts.
I remember playing against him when he made his return to the Eagles after missing most of the season through suspension.
I was sitting on the bench when he came on early in the first term and I remember thinking, ‘This man is ripped and ready to play’.
Four quarters later he had 38 disposals and polled one Brownlow vote.
I hope the Ben Cousins story continues on the right path and watching the final 15 minutes last night, it looks like it will.
He appears to be in a good space and is lucky to have a supportive family around him. Someone with his credentials will no doubt receive plenty of opportunities once he plays his final game this Sunday. The opportunities will help him keep occupied and maintain the course in the right direction.
Good luck to him.
