After guiding Collingwood to their fabled drought-breaking Premiership in 1990, coaching the Pies from 1996-1999, and being the first player to achieve the 300 game milestone, Tony Shaw can now add ‘Big Freeze Slider’ to his long list of achievements.
The annual Big Freeze event will go ahead on Monday, June 12th at the MCG to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) before Collingwood takes on Melbourne.
Now in its ninth year, Big Freeze remains an important fundraising occasion since Neale Daniher, the face of FightMND founded the event in 2014.
The mission has always remained the same, to find a cure for MND through research and effective treatment.
In 2022, Big Freeze 8 raised $19.8 million, breaking FightMND’s all-time fundraising record.
This year, with the help of a new cohort of Australian celebrities and AFL greats ready to take the icy plunge, FightMND is hoping to go one better.
Iconic Collingwood figure Tony Shaw is set to face the freezing ice water come Monday and had this to say about being selected as a Big Freeze slider this year.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be representing the Collingwood FC as a slider at the Big Freeze Kings Birthday match. Neale’s battle with this disease has been an inspiration to all in itself and the Big Freeze slide has been a highlight. If I’m getting cold I want all Collingwood members and fans to buy a beanie or donate so that we set records and be the No.1 donating club.”
From the beginning of his career, Tony has given everything he has for the Collingwood cause and this is no exception.
Join the ‘all in fight’ by purchasing a Big Freeze 9 beanie from your local Coles supermarket or donating directly to FightMND here.
