Collingwood will face West Coast on Saturday night without Darren Jolly and Nick Maxwell, but Rodney Eade is confident the important duo will only miss one match on the eve of the finals.

The Pies' hopes of clinching a top-four berth hinge on their performances against the Eagles this week then Essendon in the final round with both Jolly and Maxwell set to return against the Bombers.

Cameron Wood faces the imposing task of rucking against Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui in Jolly's absence, but Eade said Jolly's importance to the side demanded a conservative approach with a finals campaign looming.

"He's just generally sore, he's got a few little minor ailments, and we just erred on the side of caution with the finals coming up," Eade said from Melbourne airport on Friday.

"It's a big workload for him and we just didn't want to risk him getting further injured.

"He'll be right next week. Certainly if it was a final he would have played."

Maxwell hurt his hip in last week's loss to North Melbourne, but Eade maintains he will return to the line-up next week.

Premiership player Brent Macaffer hasn't been as lucky with Eade confirming he had almost certainly run out of time in his bid to return to AFL football from a knee reconstruction.

Macaffer won't play in the reserves final-round game this weekend and Eade said he wasn't among the six or seven players not currently in the side that the Pies could call on for senior action for the remainder of the campaign.

Fellow knee reconstruction recipient Andrew Krakouer, however, will play in the VFL at the weekend and is part of that group with Eade hopeful he will push for senior selection against Essendon.

Prolific onballer Dane Swan has served his club-imposed suspension and made the trip to Perth. Swan didn't play at VFL level during the two-week ban, but Eade is confident his conditioning hasn't suffered.

"I think he would have probably preferred to play in the seconds rather than the training that he's had," he said.

"We are obviously glad to get him back, he is another key midfielder and I think on that big ground he will be a real plus for us."

Eade is confident out-of-sorts forwards Travis Cloke and Chris Dawes will run into some form against the Eagles, and he all but ruled out dropping one or both if they fail to fire at Subiaco.

"Obviously their form is not where we'd like it to be, but most of the time they do give a contest," he said.

"With our injuries to some tall blokes there's probably not that many to come in, so if you do think about putting those guys out we'd have to change our game plan.

"I think it's a fair way down the track to do that."

Eade's own future has been the subject of some speculation linking him to a return to senior coaching with Port Adelaide, but the former Swans and Western Bulldogs coach poured cold water on that notion.

"I haven't [had any contact with Port] and I'm very happy with what I'm doing. I'm very happy in the black and white," he said.

"I'm very happy to stay at Collingwood. I've said that quite a few times."
