Collingwoodfc.com.au looks at the players who are set to make a difference in season 2015.
Tim Broomhead
The story so far
Broomhead became a Magpie with selection No. 20 in the 2012 National Draft. He was one of three South Australians to land at Collingwood that off-season, all of whom were chosen with the club’s first three selections in the National Draft.
In the two years since, he has played 22 VFL matches, averaging 23.6 disposals and 4.4 clearances this season.
He made his senior debut against the Western Bulldogs in round 13 last year and managed to play eight games in the second half of the year. His best outing came in the wet against Greater Western Sydney in the penultimate round when he won 23 disposals, laid three tackles and kicked two goals.
The upside
Broomhead has the Magpies excited. His teammates and coaches value his speed, quick hands, decision making and composure under pressure, while supporters best remember him for his three goals and 17 disposals on an otherwise dirty night against Brisbane in round 21 last season.
His class and poise make him a potential onballer, perhaps as soon as this year, but at the very least he will be a dangerous proposition across half forward.
The stat
Senior regulars of the future often prove that they are destined for bigger things when they make their first return to the VFL after their AFL debut. This proved to be the case for Broomhead who collected 31 disposals, took 11 marks and took the ball inside 50 six times in his first match back in the VFL after his debut.
In the fortnight that followed, Broomhead gathered a further 26 and 35 disposals and ensured a second promotion into the big league. He hasn’t looked back since.
In a nutshell
Anything is possible for Collingwood’s No. 29. His class, undersold hardness around the contest and hunger for a goal makes him one of the team’s most promising youngsters.
Where he fits into the mix in 2015 could depend on the form of some of his teammates, for his has the ability to play both in the centre square and the forward pocket.
