Coaches name Beams best afield
Midfielde maestro Dayne Beams was adjudged best on ground against St Kilda in the latest round of voting for the AFLCA’s Champion Player of the Year award.
Receiving eight votes, Beams was Collingwood’s leading disposal winner on Friday night as the 24-year old dominated in the clinches, his 33 touches including a game-high 17 contested possessions and eight clearances.
Following an injury riddled 2013 campaign, Beams has provided stark reminder of the asset Collingwood so sorely missed last season, with his dynamic on-ball displays and goal kicking prowess providing considerable impetus to a midfield rated amongst the best in the AFL.
Key forward Travis Cloke meanwhile enjoyed a welcome return to form, earning six votes for his efforts as he booted five goals, grabbed 12 marks and laid on five score assists.
Providing a timely reminder of the performances which have seen him twice named All-Australian, and claim a Copeland Trophy, Cloke was imperious as his presence loomed large within Collingwood’s forward 50, providing a focal point to the Magpies forward thrusts.
Marking his return to the senior team with 29 disposals and three goals, Josh Thomas was awarded six votes as he laid claim to a permanent berth within an already loaded Magpie midfield.
Having cemented his place with Collingwood’s best 22 last season, Thomas saw his grasp on AFL selection slip following an injury compromised pre-season which forced him to reclaim his place through the VFL.
But following his display against the Saints, Thomas certainly mounted a compelling argument to retain his place in the side, although he faces a battle from the returning Luke Ball and Dane Swan.
Leadership group member Clinton Young meanwhile was rewarded for arguably his best display in Collingwood colours with four votes, while defender Marley Williams and utility Heritier Lumumba rounded out the Magpies’ representation in the votes with three and two respectively.
