MICK Malthouse has again insisted he would have no problem working with Nathan Buckley should Collingwood’s favourite son return to the Lexus Centre in an assistant coaching role.
Last month, when Malthouse spoke exclusively to collingwoodfc.com.au, he said he wouldn’t have a problem working with the former club champion.
Malthouse is yet to re-sign beyond this season while Buckley’s future is also unknown.
North Melbourne and Richmond are both seeking coaches in 2010 and while Buckley is likely to be in the sights of both clubs, the Magpies could want to keep their former champion – considered by many to be the club’s next senior coach – in their clutches.
Some have doubted whether Malthouse, who coached Buckley throughout his time at Collingwood, would be comfortable with that scenario but the veteran coach has again endorsed any scenario that would see the pair re-unite.
“I work with anyone, I've worked with Nathan in the Australian side,” Malthouse said on Friday.
“I've had a variety of assistant coaches ... regardless of who they are, they're given responsibilities because I think that they are people that you can trust.
“They trust me, they go forward because I give them opportunity and that's the way it works. It matters not who the assistant coaches are.”
However finding room on his coaching panel, especially if the high-flying Pies continue their good form, could prove to be a problem.
Malthouse said on Friday he was more than happy with his current team.
“I have four very capable assistant coaches at the moment.”
