The matches nominated for voting this week are the famous 1995 draw in front of 94,825 fans that kick-started the tradition, the win in the wet in 2002 to signal the rise of Collingwood as a force to be reckoned with, and the 2008 encounter that saw Paul Medhurst kick six goals in the 73 point win.

Recap the story behind the ANZAC Day clash.

The Draw - 1995
What a game. Thirty-three goals between them, and still the two sides couldn’t be split at the final siren. In the first of the now traditional ANZAC Day blockbusters, Essendon led by 16 points at half time but a seven goal third term saw Collingwood hold a 14 point buffer at the last break. Saverio Rocca’s ninth goal for the day with a minute remaining levelled the scores, and a frenetic final minute that saw Nathan Buckley send the Pies back into attack for one last gasp before Essendon’s David Grenvold ran the ball to safety rounded out a match that will be talked about for years to come.

The Pies have risen - 2002
The image of Nathan Buckley triumphantly holding his arms aloft in the driving rain late in the last quarter is one etched into the minds of all Collingwood supporters. It signalled the moment the Magpies had officially emerged from the dark days of the late 1990s and returned as a competition powerhouse (never mind that Buckley’s would-be goal had clipped the post on the way through, unbeknownst to the Collingwood players). Playing against the best team of the previous three years, the Magpies played selfless football in torrential rain. Their spirit was typified by 17-year-old second gamer Mark McGough, who became a part of football folklore when he was awarded the ANZAC Day Medal for his 24 disposals and three tackles.

Collingwood 9.12 (66)

Medhurst Magic - 2008
He might have played five seasons for Fremantle but Paul Medhurst became a fully fledged Collingwood footballer on ANZAC Day 2008. The mercurial forward put his full bag of tricks on display in wet and murky conditions with six goals in Collingwood’s 73 point victory over the Bombers. Medhurst wasn’t content with six goals, taking the mark of the day in the goal square and sinking a memorable goal from the boundary line in front of the MCC Members. Scott Pendlebury showed a sign of ANZAC Days to come with 33 disposals while a youngster by the name of Sharrod Wellingham showed great promise on debut on his way to 17 disposals.

Collingwood 23.16 (154)
Essendon 12.9 (81)

Goals - Medhurst 6, Cloke 5, Davis 3, Lockyer 3
Disposals - Pendlebury 33, O’Bree 26, Didak 25
