With 19 more inside 50s and more time in possession, Collingwood worked hard to be in a position to win against the Eagles on Saturday but were unable to capitalise.
"We're learning how to win," Craig McRae said post-match.
"We put ourselves in a position to get the job done and that's another week where all the numbers looked good but we just didn't get the result.
"We reflected (after the game) on getting all the little details right to get the win.
"There was a little bit of a lack of composure at times... they have a high intercept team and we had a lot of long shots, long shots become long points.
"We had a young forward line against an experienced backline.
"I feel like sometimes we are getting caught up a little too much in the emotion of going well and getting too excited about it.
"We spoke about how we can get moments of energy in - we want to push forward, we think our pressure is still really high and we saw that today."
Nick Daicos gathered 32 disposals and had 10 score involvements in only his fourth game of AFL footy.
"I'm not big on stats but it's always good to look at them and see what's going on at that level, to see his name up the top as a 19-year-old says a lot about the way he goes about it," McRae said.
Collingwood lost Jamie Elliott early in the last quarter with a dislocated left shoulder.
"Jamie is an AC injury - he was taken straight to hospital and will be assessed," McRae said.
"He's a pivotal part of what we do and we care deeply for him."
