Collingwood’s VFLW team records its first loss since 2019 as the Southern Saints broke Collingwood’s 18 game winning streak.
Southern Saints lead from the start recording the win with 4.5 (29) to 1.3 (9) to the Pies.
The attacking momentum from the Saints was set from the start, scoring the first two goals of the quarter to Collingwood’s one point.
Due to the Saints strong defensive pressure, they were able to shut down Collingwood’s forward line completely. With not many scoring opportunities, Abbi Moloney was able to score the one goal of the match in the third quarter.
Unfortunately, they weren’t able to continue the momentum as they struggled to register many inside 50s in the fourth term.
Whilst it was a tough contest against the Saints, there were some positive signs with mid-fielders Katie Lee, Nicole Hales and Elisabeth Jackson working together to find space and take control.
Marla Neal applied the tackling pressure racking up 8 tackles for the game to try and shut down the Saints run throughout the day.
Collingwood will take on North Melbourne in round 2 at 12:05pm Saturday 19th February at Arden Street.
This match is the VFLW feature match of the round and will be televised on the AFLW Live official app and website.
