Traditions are mysterious habits in society. They are stories and actions that are passed down from generation to generation, filled with feelings, dedication and emotion.

Unfortunately, over time, some traditions fall by the wayside.

On Friday night, Collingwood is reviving an old tradition. And along with our sponsors Holden, we want you to be a part of it.

When captain Scott Pendlebury calls his players into a huddle in the Ponsford Stand goal square in the minute before the first bounce, our trainers will wave their towels above their heads.

At this moment, it’s your cue to rise to your feet and wave your Collingwood scarf, creating a sea of Black and White across the MCG.

Sound familiar?

It’s a tradition inspired by past Collingwood trainers such as Harry Langdon and John MacGibbon, who were loved by players and supporters alike for waving their trainers’ towels above their heads on the boundary line to rally the Victoria Park crowd and inspire the players into action.

During the week, Collingwood Media will be telling the story of MacGibbon and how his towel waving became a part of club folklore.

So bring your scarf to the MCG on Friday night. Watch the scoreboard and listen to our announcer as the players head to their final huddle. Then stand up and wave your Magpie pride above your head as we officially begin our season at our home ground.

But the waving won’t end there.

During the quarter-time break, four of the most passionate scarf wavers will be selected from the crowd. At half time, one of these lucky four will win a brand new Holden Barina. Keep your eye on the scoreboard and your scarf above your head during the break for your chance to win!

Traditional rivals. A packed MCG. A sea of Black and White.

It’s the perfect stage to #wavethescarf

Go Pies!
