Collingwood has confirmed six changes to its side for the round 22 clash with Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium on Saturday, including skipper Scott Pendlebury and debutant Jackson Ramsay.

The glut of inclusions has been triggered by last week’s injury crisis, which saw the Magpies casualty list balloon with the additions of Dayne Beams, Travis Cloke, Jamie Elliott, Heritier Lumumba, Ben Reid and Alan Toovey, as well as Pendlebury, who has recovered in time for this weekend’s match.

Sam Dwyer, Jesse White, Josh Thomas and Tom Langdon comprise the remaining individuals selected in response to the epidemic of wounded Magpies, while Ben Kennedy is poised for a stint in the VFL after he was named as an emergency, alongside Patrick Karnezis and Corey Gault.

Leading the raft of additions to Collingwood’s match day squad, Pendlebury has been named after he was forced to withdraw from the side only minutes before last week’s match against Brisbane after aggravating a corked thigh in the warm-up.

His late withdrawal presaged the chaos to come, as Reid (first quarter), Cloke (second quarter) and Beams’ (third quarter) participation was brought to a premature end, while Lumumba and Toovey played out the contest despite sustaining injuries during the course of the evening.

However, one’s loss marks another’s opportunity, with Ramsay among the primary beneficiaries of the unprecedented scenario, earning selection for his first match at AFL level.

Recruited with the 38th pick in the 2012 National Draft, Ramsay has been rewarded for a consistent sophomore campaign in the VFL, which has seen the West Australian excel across half back in the second tier competition.

Lauded for his discipline, resolve and speed, Ramsay will likely slot into an already youth-filled defensive unit, which will also feature Tom Langdon, who returns following a one-week spell in the VFL.

Langdon collected 21 disposals in the VFL Magpies’ stirring comeback triumph against Geelong at Skilled Stadium, which was sparked in part, by a dominant last quarter stanza from White.

The athletic forward’s late four goals proved the difference as Collingwood overturned a three goal deficit at three quarter time, marking a welcome return to form for the off-season recruit.

Thomas meanwhile will bolster a depleted midfield, stepping back into the AFL frame after averaging nearly 24 disposals, six clearances and four tackles per match at VFL level, while Sam Dwyer has been named after recovering from a hamstring injury.
