New oval open for business
Be there when Collingwood joins the State Government and the Melbourne Olympic Park Trust to open the new training oval at the former Olympic Park site on Thursday.
The Magpies will christen the new oval with its first training session on the ground from 10am.
All Collingwood supporters young and old are invited to join the players, coaches and President Eddie McGuire in officially declaring the new Olympic Park Oval open for business.
The oval is based on the site of the old Olympic Park Stadium adjacent to the Westpac Centre on Olympic Boulevard (formerly Swan St, Richmond).
The old Olympic Park Stadium was built as a warm-up track for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and was demolished in 2012.
The venue hosted a crowd of 26,900 fans at a Rugby League Test Match between Australia and New Zealand in 1991 and was a home ground for the Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Storm in their respective competitions during it's final years.
What many may not know is that the site has actually hosted VFL/AFL matches in years gone by and in fact has a slight Collingwood connection from its earliest days in operation.
Back in 1924, the Motordrome was opened on the Olympic Park site. The land had originally been developed and leased from the Crown with the assistance of the famous Collingwood benefactor John Wren.
Used primarily for speedway, motorcycle and slidecar racing, the ground acted as Melbourne's home ground for three VFL games in 1932 when the Melbourne Cricket Ground was unavailable.
It hosted three VFA Grand Finals in the 1920s and last saw a game of Aussie Rules when South Melbourne met Richmond in an exhibition game in 1935.
Demonwiki (a historical website dedicated to the Melbourne Football Club) notes that "the main issue for players at the ground was the concrete walls close to the boundary".
The venue was sold after World War II and was later converted into what was known as Olympic Park ahead of the 1956 Olympic Games.
The opening of the new ground marks the end of Collingwood's successful six-year stint at Gosch's Paddock.
The ground will always have a special place in the club's heart for its role in hosting the final training sessions in the lead up to the 2010 and 2011 Grand Finals that were attended by in excess of 10,000 fans.
Make sure you're there to witness the newest chapter in Collingwood history when the Magpies train on the club's new training ground on Thursday at 10am.
